Indie Stock Art Provider Take 3
In early 2007, ArtGirl came into the indiegamer forum and announced a service to provide stock sprite art. At $15 per pack, it was a pretty good deal and the reception for the service was very well received. ArtGirl had two packs ready for order – a Pac-man type set with ladybugs and a Zombie set – and she had plans to release more. Unfortunately, a year later ArtPakz, the site ArtGirl was selling her packs was bought over by a completely different person.
Several months before ArtGirl’s site was found to be defunct, Qitsune released her own art set called Phony Phace Art Qit. With over 150 features and 6.5 billion possible combinations, the Phony Phace Art Qit showed great promise. From Qitsune’s recent replies regarding stock art, it would seem that the reception to it was lukewarm.
Just this past month, another enterprising soul named Pkeod has publicly announced his plans to take the mantle with his own royalty-free stock art. From the discussion ensuing, it would seem like he will continue in the same vein as ArtGirl with sprite art but also provide UI graphics too. He’s already bought a domain called StockGameArt.com and has set up a poll to take your input. Accordingly, Pkeod said that if this service works out, he’ll “open up the site to other artists like how TurboSquid works.”
As someone who is planning on setting up a stock art service too, I’m looking forward to seeing Pkeod succeed. And maybe someday, I’ll be that someone who’ll compete with him. ; )
